Other procedures that attempt to include comprehensive costs (e.g. those used by US Dept of Transportation) result in total cost estimates about 3 times greater than those calculated here.

Alcohol-related injuries are less well documented than fatalities. Property damage only crashes are least likely to be reported to law enforcement officials. Costs are associated with the county in which the crash occurred.
